Google Drive has a serious spam problem. Any file we leave shared in the storage service, there is a possibility that spammers are spreading unwanted content without stopping.

Understand what happened

The Google Drive sharing system is the problem. Even if we don’t accept it, all files and folders shared with your account are automatically made available to you on Drive. And they are exposed.

To make matters worse, if you only have the “view” permission, you cannot remove it from the share. It’s a mess.

And so is the scenario: a spammer (or anyone else) shares a file or folder with you. This file or folder appears immediately in the “Quick access” area of your Drive, as well as in the “shared with You” section. And there’s no way to stop this from happening, because you don’t have to accept the sharing: It will be displayed, wanting or not.

The good news is that the files are not automatically added to your Drive and therefore are not automatically downloaded or synced to your devices.

You can right-click the item and choose “Remove” to prevent it from appearing in the “shared with Me” section. But it will continue to appear in the Quick access area and in the search results. If you accidentally open the file or folder, it will be added back to your Drive on the Web.

Why is that a problem?

There are some scenarios where this is a big problem. The first, as mentioned earlier, is for spam. Users can (and will be) bombared with junk they don’t want-all the time.

The second problem can be even more common: when you no longer want to be part of a shared file and/or folder. Since there is no way to cancel the share, you are stuck to it. This can be especially problematic if the file or shared folder is someone you no longer want to contact.

Google Drive does not offer a lock feature. Even if you block someone in Gmail, it won’t be blocked in Google Drive. This seems to be a common thing with Google services – just because you block someone in a service does not mean that it is locked in any of the others (but sometimes they are?). Yes, it’s just a mess.

Google could easily fix the problem

The most frustrating part of this issue is that the solution is quite simple: Google needs to add an acceptance feature and a removal feature that works. Simple as that: if you never accept sharing, guess what? He never shows up in your Drive folder.

In Dropbox, for example, the user is free to remove from a shared file or folder, even if it is configured for the “can see” status. This is a huge advantage over Drive and something that Google should steal from its competitor.

Google gave a statement saying that the changes are coming to Drive sharing resources and are “becoming a priority”. See the full statement:

“For the vast majority of users, the default share permissions on Drive work as expected. Unfortunately, this was not the case for some users and we sincerely apologize. In light of this problem, we are evaluating changes in our resources for preventing spam, abuse, and blocking that will prevent this type of activity from occurring in Google Drive. Meanwhile, users with similar problems can remove the folder, and the folder should not reappear in “My Drive” or “shared with me” unless they access it again. ”
